Azure vs AWS for Small Business Workloads

Cloud

Nessco Tech Services6 min read

Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services are the two largest public cloud platforms. For most small businesses, the differences matter less than how well each fits your current environment.

Azure strengths:

- Deep integration with Microsoft 365, Active Directory, and Windows Server.

- Familiar tools for businesses already using Microsoft environments.

- Strong hybrid cloud options for keeping some workloads on-prem.

AWS strengths:

- Broadest range of services and global regions.

- Mature ecosystem for startups and developer-first teams.

- Extensive third-party tooling and marketplace options.

Questions to ask before choosing:

- How much of your environment is already Microsoft-based?

- Do you need Windows virtual machines, Linux containers, or both?

- What level of support can you afford during migration and after go-live?

- Which platform offers better pricing for your expected storage and compute usage?

Many small businesses start with one provider and add the other later for specific workloads. The decision is not permanent, but switching later costs time and money.
