PCI DSS Compliance for Small Businesses
Data Protection
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) applies to any organization that handles credit card transactions — regardless of size. A single-person business taking cards is subject to the same standard as a large retailer.
IT-focused PCI requirements:
- Firewalls protecting systems that store or transmit cardholder data.
- Unique IDs for every person with system access.
- Encryption of cardholder data in transit over public networks.
- Antivirus and regular patching on systems connected to cardholder data.
- Restricted physical access to servers and payment terminals.
Ways to reduce compliance scope:
- Use a validated third-party payment processor that handles card data so your systems never see it.
- Do not store card numbers, CVV codes, or magnetic stripe data unless you have a documented business need.
- Segment your network so payment systems are isolated from guest Wi-Fi and general office computers.
PCI compliance is validated annually (or more often for larger transaction volumes). Non-compliance can result in fines, higher transaction fees, and loss of the ability to accept cards.
