"File Is Locked for Editing" in Excel? Unlock It Properly

OneDrive/SharePoint Excel locks, ghost sessions, and co-authoring conflicts — get everyone editing again.

  1. 1. Check for the ghost session first

Someone closed a laptop with the file open — the lock lingers ~10 minutes. Wait, then have everyone fully close Excel (not minimize) and retry. Most locks evaporate on their own.

  2. 2. Open in Excel for the web to bypass it

In SharePoint/OneDrive, open the file in the browser version. Web Excel supports real co-authoring and ignores most desktop locks — edit there, and the desktop copy syncs after.

  3. 3. Clear Upload Center cache and check out status

Stuck locks often come from a jammed upload cache or a file left Checked Out. Clear the Office Document Cache and confirm nobody has it checked out in the library.

"File Is Locked for Editing" in Excel? Unlock It Properly — When to Call a Pro

  • Locks recur daily on shared workbooks — the file needs restructuring or a real database.
  • Permissions are tangled — people locked out who should be in, or vice versa.
  • Version history shows data loss from conflicting saves.

Guide FAQ

Your own crashed session still holds the lock. Wait 10 minutes or open in Excel for the web, which handles session recovery gracefully.
If 3+ people edit daily, consider moving the workflow to SharePoint lists, Planner, or a proper database. Shared workbooks are a conflict machine at scale.
