Google Advanced Protection: Maximum-Security Mode in 15 Minutes

For journalists, execs, and anyone targeted — hardware keys, locked-down recovery, and what breaks when you enroll.

  1. 1. Buy two hardware security keys

Two FIDO2 keys (YubiKey or Titan, ~$25–$55 each) — one primary, one backup stored separately. Advanced Protection requires them; phones-as-keys come after, not instead.

  2. 2. Enroll at landing.google.com/advancedprotection

Sign in, register both keys, and review the consequences screen honestly: third-party app access gets heavily restricted and recovery takes days by design. This is the trade for nation-state-grade phishing resistance.

  3. 3. Fix what breaks: mail apps and recovery

Desktop mail clients need re-authentication; some third-party apps lose access entirely (use web versions). Print recovery codes and store them off-site — lockouts here are slow by design.

Google Advanced Protection: Maximum-Security Mode in 15 Minutes — When to Call a Pro

  • Rolling this out for executives or a whole leadership team with spares and procedures.
  • Locked out of Advanced Protection — recovery is deliberately slow, get guided help.
  • Need equivalent hardening across Microsoft 365 too.

Guide FAQ

For most, authenticator MFA plus a password manager is plenty. Advanced Protection suits the targeted: execs, finance staff, activists, journalists.
Multi-day recovery with identity verification. That's why the program demands two keys plus printed codes from day one.
