Too-Good Job Offer by Text? It's a Scam

$500/day rating hotels, mystery shopping, task apps with deposits — the task-scam anatomy and the deposit trap.

  1. 1. Apply the legitimacy test

Real employers interview by video or in person, never hire via WhatsApp alone, and never ask YOU to deposit money for tasks, training, or equipment. Failing any one of these = scam, no exceptions.

  2. 2. Never deposit their checks or crypto

The classic trap: they send a fake check, you deposit it, forward 'profits' in crypto, and the check bounces weeks later leaving you liable. Banks hold YOU responsible for deposited fakes.

  3. 3. Report and block in 30 seconds

Screenshot, block, report to FTC (reportfraud.ftc.gov) and the carrier (forward to 7726). Then warn job-hunting friends — these target the desperate, which is exactly who needs the warning.

Too-Good Job Offer by Text? It's a Scam — When to Call a Pro

  • Money or checks already moved — bank fraud team immediately.
  • Personal documents (ID, SSN) sent to 'employers' — freeze and monitor.
  • Staff job-hunting alone online — team briefing on the red flags.

Guide FAQ

Small real payments build trust for the big steal — or the 'payments' are fake checks that bounce later. Profit that requires your deposits isn't profit.
Legitimate recruiters email from company domains and interview properly. Pure-text hiring with task deposits is 100% scam territory.
