Mac Running Slow? 5 Fixes Before You Buy a New One

Spinning beach balls and slow boots on macOS — storage, login items, and the one upgrade that matters most.

  1. 1. Free up disk space (macOS needs 15% free)

Apple menu → About This Mac → More Info → Storage Settings. Clear caches, old iOS backups, and Downloads. A nearly-full drive slows everything because macOS has no room for swap and updates.

  2. 2. Trim login items and background apps

System Settings → General → Login Items. Remove updaters, chat apps, and anything you don't use daily. Then check Activity Monitor for runaway processes eating CPU — browsers with 40 tabs are the usual suspect.

  3. 3. Update macOS and reset the SMC/NVRAM if behavior is weird

Install all pending updates first. For Intel Macs with fan, battery, or sleep weirdness, reset the SMC and NVRAM (Apple's support pages have the exact key combos per model). Apple Silicon Macs just need a restart.
