Restore an Older Version of Any Office File in 60 Seconds

Overwrote the budget, saved over the proposal — version history rollback for OneDrive, SharePoint, and desktop Office.

  1. 1. Open version history where the file lives

OneDrive/SharePoint web: right-click → Version history. Desktop Office: File → Info → Version History. Pick by timestamp and preview before restoring — the right version is usually obvious.

  2. 2. Restore as a copy first for important files

Download the old version alongside the current one instead of overwriting. Merging the good parts beats gambling the whole file on one restore — especially with other editors active.

  3. 3. Check retention before you need it

Default 365 keeps 500 versions — plenty unless admin policies shortened it. If history is empty on an old file, retention was likely cut; that's the conversation to have before the next emergency.

Restore an Older Version of Any Office File in 60 Seconds — When to Call a Pro

  • No versions exist and the file matters — recovery assessment, fast.
  • Ransomware burned through versions — clean-backup restoration, not version roulette.
  • Business needs guaranteed retention, not defaults that quietly expire.
