Business Security Cameras Without the Cloud Bill

Local NVR versus cloud subscriptions — storage math, placement, and remote viewing that doesn't cost monthly.

  1. 1. Do the 3-year math before buying

$10 per camera monthly times 8 cameras times 36 months equals $2,880 — a local NVR with drives costs less once and holds more. Cloud wins for multi-site simplicity; local wins on total cost for single sites.

  2. 2. Place for faces and plates, not walls

Mount 8–10 feet high at entrances and registers, angled to catch faces straight-on. High corner domes film the tops of heads — useless for identification. Walk the sight lines at install time.

  3. 3. Size storage for 30 days minimum

4MP cameras at 15fps need roughly 1TB per camera monthly with motion recording. Buy the drives for 30-day retention upfront — footage you need is always from 3 weeks ago.

Guide FAQ

PoE (wired power plus data) for reliability — Wi-Fi cameras drop exactly when incidents happen. Wireless only where cable truly can't reach.
Florida generally allows video in non-private business areas; audio recording has stricter two-party rules. Post notices and consult counsel for audio.
