Restore Any SharePoint File Version (Before Someone Notices)

The shared spreadsheet is wrecked and nobody admits it — version timeline, restore-as-copy, and library settings.

  1. 1. Open the version timeline

Library → right-click file → Version history. Every save with author and timestamp is listed — find the last good one before the damage. Preview it to be sure.

  2. 2. Restore as a copy for safety

For contested files, download the good version and re-upload with a clear name instead of overwriting. Two minutes of caution beats a second incident over the restore itself.

  3. 3. Check library versioning settings

Library settings → Versioning: confirm major versions are kept (500 default). If history is thin or empty, retention was cut — fix the setting now, not during the next emergency.

  • Compliance demands guaranteed, auditable retention policies.
