New ISP Self-Install Kit: Avoid the 3 Classic Mistakes

Spectrum, Frontier, or Quantum box just arrived? Activation order, modem placement, and the speed test that proves it.

  1. 1. Activate over the right connection

Connect the modem to the wall jack FIRST (coax or fiber ONT), power it, wait for solid lights, then run the ISP app/activation. Activating before the line syncs is the #1 self-install failure — solid lights before software, always.

  2. 2. Place the gateway centrally, not where the cable enters

ISPs install at the easiest jack, usually a corner or garage — terrible for Wi-Fi. Get a long coax/Ethernet run or place your own router centrally behind the gateway in bridge mode. Corner placement wastes half your signal outside your space.

  3. 3. Prove the speed wired before calling

Ethernet to the gateway, run three speed tests, screenshot all. Below 80% of plan speed wired = ISP problem with evidence. Above that but slow on Wi-Fi = your network, not theirs — different fix entirely.

New ISP Self-Install Kit: Avoid the 3 Classic Mistakes — When to Call a Pro

  • Line never syncs (blinking lights forever) — needs a line tech, and we'll tell you exactly what to say.
  • You want your own quality router behind their gateway — bridge-mode setup done right.
  • Whole-office coverage from day one — mesh installed with the new service.

Guide FAQ

Your own for control and coverage; theirs for simplicity and support. The sweet spot: their modem (often required) plus your router handling Wi-Fi.
Over Wi-Fi, that's actually normal for many devices. Test wired first — if wired hits 800+, the plan is fine and Wi-Fi is the project.
