Windows Search Shows Nothing? Rebuild It in 5 Minutes

Blank results, missing files, indexing stuck — restart the service, rebuild the index, and check the exclusions.

  1. 1. Restart Windows Search service

Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Details tab → end SearchHost.exe (Windows 11) or SearchIndexer.exe. It restarts automatically. This clears the stuck state behind most sudden search failures.

  2. 2. Run the Search troubleshooter

Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Search and Indexing → Run. Let it detect permission and index problems automatically — it fixes the common ones silently.

  3. 3. Rebuild the index overnight

Control Panel → Indexing Options → Advanced → Rebuild. It takes hours on big drives, so start it at bedtime. Check that your User folder is in Included Locations first — excluded folders never appear in results.

Windows Search Shows Nothing? Rebuild It in 5 Minutes — When to Call a Pro

  • Search broke across an office after an update — likely policy or profile corruption.
  • Outlook search specifically is broken — different index, different fix.
  • You need Everything/ESE-style instant search deployed across workstations.

Guide FAQ

Usually a corrupt catalog or a dying drive slowing reads to a crawl. Rebuild once; if it sticks again, check drive health before anything else.
For filename search it's instant and excellent. It doesn't search file contents or Outlook mail like Windows Search does — use both.
