Microsoft 365 Security for Tampa Businesses

Security

Nessco Tech Services6 min read

Microsoft 365 is where most Tampa Bay small businesses run email, file storage, and collaboration. It is also a top target for attackers because a single compromised mailbox can launch phishing attacks against your customers and vendors.

Security basics for Microsoft 365:

1. Turn on MFA for every user, especially administrators and finance staff. Use an authenticator app, not SMS.

2. Enable security defaults or conditional access policies so sign-ins from unfamiliar locations or devices require extra verification.

3. Use anti-phishing and anti-malware policies in Exchange Online to filter malicious messages before they reach inboxes.

4. Do not skip mailbox auditing. Audit logs help you see who accessed what and when.

5. Back up Microsoft 365 data. Microsoft retains deleted email and files for a limited window, but that is not a substitute for a dedicated backup with point-in-time recovery.

If your Microsoft 365 tenant was set up years ago and never reviewed, there are likely security gaps worth closing.
