Audio Crackling in Headphones? Fix the Stutter

Pops and crackles on calls and music — Bluetooth codec, exclusive mode, and driver fixes in order.

  1. 1. Switch Bluetooth to stable mode for calls

For meetings, set the headset to its Hands-Free/ headset profile (not Stereo) in Sound settings, or go wired. High-quality stereo codecs collapse under two-way call load — that's physics, not a defect.

  2. 2. Disable audio enhancements

Sound settings → device Properties → Enhancements → check Disable all enhancements. Windows 'improvements' cause crackling on more headsets than any hardware fault does.

  3. 3. Update audio and Bluetooth drivers together

Update both from the PC maker (not just Windows Update), then test with exclusive mode off in the app. Post-update crackling is a driver mismatch until proven otherwise.

Audio Crackling in Headphones? Fix the Stutter — When to Call a Pro

  • Crackling across devices and apps — possible jack, DAC, or board issue.
  • Office-wide headset standardization that just works on every call.
  • Podcast or content audio needing clean capture chains.

Guide FAQ

Wired. Every wireless link adds latency and a dropout source. A $25 wired headset outperforms $200 Bluetooth buds for meeting reliability.
Calls use two-way low-latency codecs; video uses buffered one-way streams. Different paths, different failure modes — fix the call path specifically.
