Camera or Mic Dead on Zoom/Teams? The 4-Minute Fix

They can't see you, they can't hear you — privacy shutters, app permissions, and the default-device trap.

  1. 1. Check the physical shutter and mute switches

Slide the webcam cover open and check headset mic-mute switches — half of all 'broken camera' tickets end here. Laptops with kill switches (Framework, some Lenovos) need the function-key toggle too.

  2. 2. Fix app permissions

Windows: Settings → Privacy → Camera/Microphone → allow desktop apps. Mac: System Settings → Privacy → Camera/Microphone → check your meeting app. Browsers need per-site permission too — click the camera icon in the address bar.

  3. 3. Set the right default devices

In Zoom/Teams settings, explicitly pick your mic, speaker, and camera instead of 'Same as System'. USB headsets that get unplugged once silently reroute everything to laptop speakers — this setting prevents the loop.

Camera or Mic Dead on Zoom/Teams? The 4-Minute Fix — When to Call a Pro

  • Camera vanished from Device Manager entirely — likely hardware or driver failure.
  • You need a whole meeting-room setup: camera, mics, speakers that work for everyone.
  • It's a work machine locked down by policies blocking device access.

Guide FAQ

Per-app permissions. Granting the camera to Zoom doesn't grant it to Teams or Chrome — each app needs its own permission in system settings.
If you meet daily, yes — a $60 external cam beats every built-in laptop camera. We can recommend one that matches your lighting and room.
