Photos in Two Clouds: Google + iCloud Redundancy in an Hour

One cloud is one basket — run both Google Photos and iCloud without duplicates eating double storage.

  1. 1. Let each cloud do what it's best at

iCloud: full-device backup and originals. Google Photos: cross-platform access and legendary search. Enable both on the iPhone — they back up independently without fighting.

  2. 2. Deduplicate the overlap once

Run both for a month, then compare libraries and delete the obvious duplicates from the secondary. Ongoing duplicates are minimal — both services skip identical uploads automatically.

  3. 3. Add the local third copy yearly

Annual Takeout/iCloud download to an external drive stored elsewhere. Two clouds plus one local copy is genuine 3-2-1 for the irreplaceable stuff.

Photos in Two Clouds: Google + iCloud Redundancy in an Hour — When to Call a Pro

  • Decades of photos scattered across accounts and dead phones — consolidation project.
  • Locked out of one cloud with the only copies inside.
  • Team sharing setup so everyone contributes to one archive.

Guide FAQ

Roughly $3–$5/mo total for both base tiers covering most small teams. Compare that to the value of every file you own.
iPhone teams: iCloud (device integration). Mixed/Android teams: Google. The other is the safety net, not the daily driver.
