Google Photos Full? Save 10GB Without Losing Memories

Blurry duplicates, 4K videos, and screenshots eating your quota — the cleanup order that actually works.

  1. 1. Let Google find the junk first

Photos → Storage → Review large photos and videos, blurry photos, and screenshots. Delete in bulk — screenshots and memes are the low-hanging gigabytes for almost everyone.

  2. 2. Switch future backups to Storage Saver

Photos Settings → Backup quality → Storage Saver. Slight compression invisible on phones, roughly half the space. Keep Original quality only for the DSLR archive that earns it.

  3. 3. Download the keepers locally, then empty trash

Use Google Takeout for a full local copy of what matters, verify it opens, then empty Photos trash (items count against quota for 60 days). Now you have 3-2-1 instead of 1-0-0.

Guide FAQ

For phone viewing and prints up to 8x10, no visible difference. Pixel-peepers with mirrorless cameras should keep Originals — everyone else saves gigabytes.
Accounts inactive 2+ years can be deleted with everything in them. Activity plus a local Takeout copy makes this a non-issue.
