External Drive Not Showing Up? Recover Access Safely

Plugged in, spinning, invisible — USB power, drive letters, and the order that protects your data.

  1. 1. Rule out power and ports

Plug directly into the PC (no hubs), try a rear USB port on desktops, and use the original cable — big drives need more power than front-panel ports and long cables deliver. Listen: spinning with clicks is very different from silent.

  2. 2. Look in Disk Management before anything else

Right-click Start → Disk Management. If the drive appears without a letter, right-click → Change Drive Letter. If it shows as RAW or Unallocated, stop — that's corruption or partition damage, and every further click risks more.

  3. 3. Never initialize or format a drive with data on it

Windows will offer to initialize or format the 'broken' drive. Decline. Those operations destroy the map to your files. If the data matters, image the drive first or hand it to a pro before any write operation.
