Desktop Icons Disappeared? Get Them Back in a Minute

Empty desktop after an update — icon visibility toggle, tablet mode, and the OneDrive folder shuffle.

  1. 1. Toggle icon visibility back on

Right-click desktop → View → check Show desktop icons. Updates and misclicks flip this silently. If icons return, you're done in ten seconds.

  2. 2. Check for a temporary profile

If wallpaper and settings also reset, you're in a temp profile — your files are safe in C:\Users\YourName. Restart once; if it persists, the profile is corrupt and needs repair before anything writes to the temp one.

  3. 3. Look in the OneDrive Desktop folder

OneDrive backup sometimes relocates Desktop into the cloud folder. Check File Explorer → OneDrive → Desktop. Files aren't gone — they moved, and the desktop just shows the local (now empty) copy.

Desktop Icons Disappeared? Get Them Back in a Minute — When to Call a Pro

  • Temp profile on every boot — profile rebuild with data preserved.
  • Files genuinely missing across local and cloud — recovery assessment.
  • Business PCs where profiles must roam correctly — domain profile work.
