Washed-Out Colors on Your Monitor? Fix HDR and Calibration

Gray blacks and pale colors after enabling HDR — Windows HDR toggle, SDR brightness, and cable requirements.

  1. 1. Match HDR to content, not always-on

Windows Settings → System → Display → HDR: turn on 'Play streaming HDR video' but leave system-wide HDR off unless your monitor is truly HDR-capable. Fake-HDR panels wash out everything for zero benefit.

  2. 2. Calibrate SDR brightness inside HDR mode

With HDR on, open the Windows HDR Calibration app (free from the Microsoft Store) and set SDR content brightness. This single slider fixes most 'everything looks gray' complaints.

  3. 3. Check cable and monitor HDR setting

Enable HDR in the monitor's own menu too, and use DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0+ cables. An old cable silently drops you to washed-out 8-bit while Windows insists HDR is on.

Washed-Out Colors on Your Monitor? Fix HDR and Calibration — When to Call a Pro

  • Color accuracy matters for your work (photo, video, design) — pro calibration with a colorimeter.
  • Monitor shows artifacts, flicker, or lines regardless of settings — panel or cable fault.
  • Multi-monitor color matching across different models for an office.

Guide FAQ
