Laptop Stolen? Remote Lock, Track, and Damage Control

The first-hour playbook: Find My, remote lock, password resets in kill-order, and the police report that matters.

  1. 1. Lock and locate immediately

Find My (Apple/Microsoft/Google) → mark Lost, lock with a message, note the last location. Screenshot everything — locations update while thieves move, and that trail helps police.

  2. 2. Reset passwords in kill order

Email first (it's the recovery path to everything), then banking, then Apple/Microsoft/Google, then social. From a clean device, end all sessions everywhere as you go.

  3. 3. File the report with serials ready

Police report with serial number, plus your business insurance claim. Carriers and employers need the report number too — file once, reference everywhere.

Laptop Stolen? Remote Lock, Track, and Damage Control — When to Call a Pro

  • Business laptop with client data — breach assessment and notification duties may apply.
  • No encryption was enabled — assume full data exposure and act accordingly.
  • You need fleet-wide tracking, encryption enforcement, and remote wipe going forward.

Guide FAQ

Never confront — give locations to police only. Remote lock and wipe protect you; heroics endanger you.
Only if encryption was on (then the wipe destroys keys instantly). Without encryption, assume exposure and reset everything.
