Restore a Deleted File From Time Machine in 2 Minutes

The file was there yesterday — enter Time Machine, travel back, and pull it out without restoring everything.

  1. 1. Open the folder, then enter Time Machine

Open Finder to the folder where the file lived, then click Time Machine → Browse. The timeline on the right shows every hourly snapshot — navigate to before the deletion.

  2. 2. Restore just that file

Select the file → Restore. It returns to its original spot (or Desktop if the folder moved on). Single-file restore beats full-system rollback for every scenario except total failure.

  3. 3. If the timeline is empty, check the drive

No snapshots means the backup drive was disconnected, full, or excluded that folder. Reconnect, check exclusions in Time Machine settings, and run Back Up Now.
