Number Pad Dead on Boot? Enable NumLock by Default
PIN entry failing every morning — BIOS settings, registry default, and the Fast Startup trap.
1. Enable NumLock in BIOS/UEFI
Reboot into BIOS (Del/F2) → find Bootup NumLock State → Enabled. The BIOS initializes the keyboard before Windows loads — if it's off here, Windows inherits off every boot.
2. Set the Windows default via registry
Win+R → regedit → HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard → set InitialKeyboardIndicators to 2. Log out and back in to verify — login-screen state follows this key.
3. Beware Fast Startup undoing it
Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what power buttons do → uncheck Fast Startup (or live with toggling). Fast Startup's hybrid shutdown is famous for resetting NumLock state.
