SD Card Corrupted? Photo Recovery Steps in Order

Camera says card error, years of photos at stake — stop writing, image first, recover second.

  1. 1. Stop using the card immediately

Remove it from the camera and don't format, shoot more, or 'repair' it in-camera. Every write risks overwriting the photos still physically there. Read-only from this second forward.

  2. 2. Image the card before touching recovery

On a PC, create a full byte-image of the card (free tools: USB Image Tool, dd). All recovery attempts run against the image — the original stays pristine no matter what goes wrong.

  3. 3. Run recovery software on the image

PhotoRec (free) or DMDE scan the image for JPEG/RAW signatures regardless of filesystem damage. Recover to a DIFFERENT drive, then verify photos open before celebrating.

SD Card Corrupted? Photo Recovery Steps in Order — When to Call a Pro

  • Card physically damaged (cracked, bent, wet) — lab recovery, don't DIY.
  • Software finds nothing — deeper carving or professional tools needed.
  • Wedding/client shoot with money attached — stop and hand it over immediately.

Guide FAQ

No — formatting rewrites the filesystem map and can destroy recoverability. Decline, remove the card, and follow the steps above.
Buy name-brand cards from real retailers (counterfeits fail constantly), format in-camera before each shoot, and back up same-day. Cards are consumables.
