Taskbar Missing or Frozen in Windows? Restore It

No Start bar, frozen clock, auto-hide gone rogue — Explorer restart, display scaling, and the multi-monitor trap.

  1. 1. Restart Windows Explorer

Ctrl+Shift+Esc → find Windows Explorer → Restart. The taskbar is part of Explorer — restarting it rebuilds the bar in seconds without rebooting anything else.

  2. 2. Check auto-hide and multi-monitor settings

Move the mouse to every screen edge — auto-hide may just be on. Then Settings → Personalization → Taskbar → Taskbar behaviors: confirm auto-hide is off and multi-display taskbars show where you expect.

  3. 3. Fix display scaling conflicts

Mismatched scaling across monitors (125% laptop, 100% external) can push the taskbar off-screen. Align scaling, sign out and back in once. Undocking without Win+P → PC screen only causes the same vanishing act.

Taskbar Missing or Frozen in Windows? Restore It — When to Call a Pro

  • Explorer crashes in a loop — deeper corruption needing repair or reset.
  • Taskbar policies locked by old work management on a personal PC.
  • Multi-monitor office setups that must behave identically at every desk.

Guide FAQ

Only top or bottom natively (Taskbar settings → behaviors). Side taskbars need third-party tools — we advise against them on work machines.
Check the CMOS battery and time sync (Settings → Time → Sync now). A dead motherboard battery causes both symptoms together on older desktops.
