Selling Your Old Phone? Wipe It Right (Keep Photos, Kill Data)

Backup, sign out, encrypt, reset, verify — the order that keeps your memories and kills your data before trade-in.

  1. 1. Back up everything two ways

Run a full iCloud/Google backup AND copy photos to a computer or second cloud. Verify the backup completed and spot-check that photos open. The wipe is forever — 'I thought it synced' is the classic last words.

  2. 2. Sign out of everything, then remove the device

Sign out of iCloud/Google on the phone, remove it from your account's device list, unpair watches and accessories, and turn off Find My. Skipping this leaves activation lock on — your buyer gets a brick and you get a headache.

  3. 3. Encrypt (Android), reset, and verify empty

iPhones encrypt by default — just Erase All Content. Android: encrypt first in Security settings, then factory reset. After reboot, confirm it boots to the fresh welcome screen with none of your accounts present.

Selling Your Old Phone? Wipe It Right (Keep Photos, Kill Data) — When to Call a Pro

  • The phone is dead or locked and holds the only copy of photos.
  • It's a work phone with company data — wiping needs IT sign-off and records.
  • You need a proper photo archive built before anything gets wiped.

Guide FAQ

On modern encrypted phones, yes — the reset destroys the keys, making remnants unreadable. On ancient unencrypted Androids, overwrite with large files first, then reset.
Remove both. Move the SIM to your new phone or destroy it; keep or wipe the SD card separately — factory reset often leaves SD contents intact.
